A manuscript copy of a letter by John N. Barbour to General John Stockton, dated May 5, 1846, and 33 letters between 1831 and 1846 from various merchants and agents in Europe, the United States, and Hawaii document Sullivan & Barbour's trade arrangements and payment for a variety of goods, including lemons, oranges, mulberry trees, cotton, buckets, brimstone, oil, and rags. The correspondence reports prices for these and other commodities; discusses shipping matters and market concerns, such as the 1835 cholera outbreak which blocked trade in Italy and France; and supplies news of crop quality, other merchants' investments, and ship routes. An ALS from Calder & McNicol of Liverpool dated April 29, 1840, includes a statement of account for freight laid on the ship Robin Hood. Correspondents include William S. Fitzwilliam and William Hunter, Sullivan & Barbour's agents in the Mediterranean; Power & Unett of Messina; Robert Gower & Co. of Marseilles; John Davis & Co. of Trieste; Lovering & Penniman of Baltimore; Perlam & Crafts of Hallowell, Maine; Ladd & Co. of Oahu; and Zacheus Holmes, captain of the ship Impulse.
